Manufacturing Readiness Levels and Assessments

DoD Technology Webinar Series

After the initial adoption of Technology Readiness Assessments, Manufacturing Readiness was introduced to focus on the readiness of technologies and designs to be produced using proposed manufacturing processes.  In most cases, the technologies proposed for system acquisition were not able to be produced within the planned cost or schedule, resulting in substantial cost increases and cancelled programs.  Manufacturing Readiness Levels (MRLs) represent a method to capture the maturity of manufacturing processes and production planning at early stages, including Milestones A & B.   The current MRL body of knowledge has been developed by a broad segment of DoD and industry experts, and is available for both industry and government program mangers.  This presentation will include the descriptions and alignment of MRLs throughout the Defense Acquisition Lifecycle and discuss the 2008 MRL Deskbook.
